REDD+ Network Field Study Tour to Kien Giang

A REDD+ Network Field Study Tour is planed for five days visit to REDD+ activities in the Mekong River Basin.

Background:

The UN-REDD+ Programme assists Vietnam to strengthen the country’s capacity to be ready for REDD+ implementation. The REDD+ programme will ultimately encompass all forest lands and all forest types, each forest type having a specific approach for MRV, financing, interventions and linkage with other government programmes and policies.

The "Conservation and Development of the Biosphere Reserve of Kien Giang" project, implemented by GTZ and financially supported by AusAid, is developing strategies to protect and enhance carbon stocks in the mangrove and coastal Melaleuca forests of Kien Giang province. The project is also developing strategies to enable the inclusion of activities under the REDD+ programme, in order to generate supplemental income for forest land owners and thus foster the sustainable management of mangroves and coastal forests.

Objective:

The overall objective of the study tour is to create understanding among members of the REDD+ Network of the specific nature that the various forest types have for REDD+ implementation, in particular the conditions of mangrove and coastal forests. A secondary objective of the study tour is to learn of the experiences of the project in developing MRV and intervention strategies for mangrove and Melaleuca forests with the aim of carbon sequestration and within a broader policy context (in this case, coastal zone protection).

Expected outputs:

  • Improved understanding among members of the REDD+ Network of the need to develop specific approaches for the different forest types of Viet Nam.
  • Improved understanding among members of the REDD+ Network on methods and tools to implement REDD+ operationally, particularly in mangrove and Melaleuca forests.
  • Draft document describing a methodology for description of specific forest types and approaches for MRV, financing and intervention strategies.

Participation:

The UN-REDD+ Programme will invite and cover expenses for approximately 8 - 10 participants from government agencies:

  • MARD
  • MONRE
  • MPI

In addition, invitations to participate at own cost will be extended to a small number of relevant organizations:
