The model of the vegetable - Erythrophalum scandens in My Phuong commune

In 2015, the UN-REDD+ phase II programme in Bac Kan province has supported My Phuong commune in formulating and implementing the Site REDD+ Action Plan (SiRAP), including the expanding of the vegetable - Erythrophalum scandens, a specialty vegetable of Bac Kan - a mountainous province, to increase income for local people and reduce pressure on forests.

Up till now, the Programme have supported 12 households in Thach Ngoa village in seedling, tree care techniques and expanding model. This has brought a substantial income to the local people; Typically, the household of Mr. Duong Van Huynh initially has only a few hundred m2 planted Erythrophalum scandens, but so far, it has been expanded to about 3,000 m2, and earning over 50 million dong each year.

Mr. Ha Quoc Thach, Head of Thach Ngoa Village, said that there were only 02 households collecting seedling from forest for trial planting, but with the support of the Programme in seedling and technical instruction, more than a dozen households have been engaged in the model. The Erythrophalum scandens is planted alternately with fruit trees in the garden, forest cover and under thin canopy; therefore, it does not affect the forest and bring a good income for the local people. With the demand in the current market (about 25,000VND/kg), many households will make use of garden area and foothills to plant the vegetable. In the future, households want to establish a cooperative group producing fresh vegetables to support each other in production and consumption, bringing greater value to the local people.
